The 2003 Engineering Student Awards Ceremony

On April 24, 2003 the Engineering Science Department and the Engineering Department Board of Advisors proudly presented this year's student awards. The ceremony took place in the Great Hall in the Chapman Graduate Center. We are pleased to say that many patrons, parents, and alumni were able to attend.

Awards were presented as follows:

Academic Excellence Award - Award to: Noel Chris Giebink. Certificate presented in recognition of outstanding academic performance in engineering studies. Student must have senior status, be eligible to graduate with honors, and be approved by a 2/3 vote of the Engineering Science faculty.

Professional Promise Award - Award to: Melissa Manke & Amanda Falcone. Certificate presented in recognition of outstanding potential for professional success as evidenced by exceptional academic performance in engineering studies and strong leadership in extracurricular activities. Student must have senior status, demonstrated high quality leadership, involvement in extracurricular activities, and high academic performance as evidenced by a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. Student must be approved by a 2/3 vote of the Engineering Science faculty.

Distinguished Service Award - Award to: Clara McDaniel. Certificate presented to recognize extraordinary contributions to the promotion of engineering students' professional development through department activities and leadership provided to the Trinity Engineers organization.

R.V. Andrews Outstanding Junior Engineering Student Award - Awards to: Joanna Payne & Aaron Fullerton. Provided in the name of Dr. R.V. Andrews, former chair of the Engineering Science Department, to recognize an outstanding student in the Engineering Science program who has achieved second semester junior level status and who has demonstrated high academic Achievement and significant involvement and leadership in various engineering activities. The award is normally around $1000 to be applied towards tuition.

R.V. Andrews Outstanding Sophomore Engineering Student Award - Awards to: Brittany Sanders & Lindsay Wetzel. Given to recognize an outstanding second semester sophomore Engineering Science student. The award is normally around $150 to be applied towards tuition.

Dr. Earl Doderer Award of Excellence - Award to: Lindsay Wetzel. Certificate recognizing the student that received the highest grade in Freshman Statics (ENGR 1313 - Mechanics I).

Junior Academic Achievement Award - Awards to: Aaron Fullerton, Joanna Payne, Roberto Aranibar, Hayden Edwards & Emilie Kopp. Payment of the costs of the FE Exam (approximately $50 each) for at least the top five Engineering Science students based on their cumulative GPA at the end of their junior year.

Outstanding Junior Design Project Award - Awards to: Aaron Fullerton & Roberto Aranibar. Certificates awarded to Engineering Science junior design team members recommended by the faculty and selected by the Board as having completed the outstanding junior design project.

Senior Academic Progress Award- Awards to: Shohei Yokoyama & Elizabeth Zapp. Certificates to the top two to five Engineering Science seniors achieving the greatest increase in cumulative grade point average from the beginning of their sophomore year through the end of their junior year.

Swalm Scholarship - Awards to: Roberto Aranibar, Devin Kelly, Kathleen Lachance, Kavita Murphy & Shohei Yokoyama. Provided by Mr. And Mrs. David C. Swalm of Houston, Texas to support Trinity University Engineering Science students who elect to take 9 or 10 semesters to complete their program of study. The amount of the award will be dependent upon the number of qualified candidates in any given year and will normally be around $2000 towards tuition.

Margaret Jean Abernethy Scholarship - Awards to: Tiffany Forest, Brandon Fremion, Roberto Francis, & Lindsay Wetzel. Established by Dr. Lonnie Abernethy, in the name of his former wife, to support one or more outstanding sophomore students in Engineering Science. The award is based entirely on academic achievement. If possible the award will go to a National Merit Scholar. This monetary award will normally be around $1600 towards tuition.

IEEE Awards- Awards to: Erich Hefner & Jered Cartmill.

Christian Community Foundation Scholarship-Award to: Julie Lowstetter.

Texas Space Grant Consortium Scholarship-Awards to: Brittany Sanders & Kathleen Lachance.

Phi Beta Kappa Engineering Students Honored-Chair of the department, Dr. Mahbub Uddin, recognized two engineering student's: Daniel de Robles & Will Graf as new Phi Beta Kappa inductees.
