Engineering Science UNIX Network

Samba on the Sun Workstations

For engineering students, you should now have access to your UNIX network space from University Lab computers as your X: drive.

You should be able to get access to your UNIX network space from a Windows-running PC aywhere on campus (we haven't tested from the dorms yet--please do so and tell me if it doesn't work and the details (error messages, etc.). I suggest that you also use the X: drive on your own machine to make your computing environment similar on all PCs.

DO NOT TRY TO CONNECT USING NETWORK BROWSING. IT's A WASTE OF TIME!

To get access from a PC you must `map a network drive.' Right-click on Network Neighborhood, enter as 'path' \\rex.engr.trinity.edu. Click reconnect at login if you want the drive the next time and you should have access to your UNIX filespace! I've given the NT instructions--I think that Win98 is similar. Win2k is a bit different, but I think you can figure it out.

Mapping a Network drive in NT

The window shows an available drive letter. You can select another, but...be careful.

Mapping using Start/Run

This will launch a graphical directory window of your UNIX filespace, good for this session only.

If there's anything I could add here that would be helpful, please let me know.
