Engineering Science UNIX Network

Sharity on the Sun Workstations

Open a terminal window ( one way to do this is to right-click on the background and choose Hosts/This Host) and type

Sharity &

and return. This launches the network browser and puts a program icon on your desktop. You can open the icon if you wish and wander around the menus, but you don't have to!

Once Sharity is running, you can view the machines offering to share files via the directory /NetHood. Use the file manager to browse if you wish, or you can use terminal window commands (e.g. cd /NetHood and ls /NetHood). The initial stages may take some time, since there are about 1300 machines on campus offering to share.

An Example Using the Terminal Window and UNIX Commands:

After launching sharity, type in the terminal window:

cd /NetHood/tucc-tiger/users/your_user_name

and return. That wil get you to your `Y' drive [note that UNIX is not constrained to 26 `drive' connections]. Sharity will prompt you for a password (your TRINITY password, NOT your engineering password).

Another Example Using the File Manager:

After launching sharity, launch the file manager. Where it shows /home/your_user_name, clear the default entry and type /NetHood/tucc-tiger/users/your_user_name and then return. Sharity will prompt you for a password (your TRINITY password, NOT your engineering password). You should now see your `Y' drive files.

Closing Sharity

When you are done, it is very important that you first close all connections to the remote drive(s)--e.g. in a terminal, change back to your local home directory (cd ~). In the file manager, choose `File', then `Go Home'.

Close any programs (e.g. if you're editing a Word document in Open Office, be sure to close the document from Open Office before closing Sharity!) that are using files on the remote drives--only then should you close Sharity (left-click the icon and choose Close). You'll be prompted about logging out (from the Network, not your workstation), and then you're done!

If there's anything I could add here that would be helpful, please let me know.
